Manistee Environmental Action Collaborative to have two expert speakers on recycling Wednesday June19, 2024 7:00 p.m. at the Manistee Downtown Education Center, 400 River St., Manistee.
A.J. Johnson, Manager, Municipal Services for Republic Services, will present along with Karla Smith Kasten, Manistee County Recycling, Manistee County Green Team and Bay Area Recycling for Community in Kaleva. They welcome your questions.
A.J. Johnson, as Manager of Municipal Services for Republic Services of Northwest Michigan, serves over 44 municipalities throughout Northwest and Central Michigan. Services managed include curbside collection of solid waste/recycling and drop off collection sites for municipalities.
Mr. Johnson has been employed with Republic Services for 11 years, and as a Montcalm County Materials Management Plan Committee Member helped facilitate
With the partnership of Montcalm County and Republic Services he helped facilitate a county wide recycling drop off site program which includes 6 sites that use compactors. This program was recently given the “Excellence in Recycling” award at the Michigan Recycling Coalition annual conference in Port Huron in early May. During 2023, the recycling program collected 871,290 lbs. of mixed recycling and 86,380 lbs of cardboard.
All of which is pertinent with Manistee's loss of cardboard recycling when Catholic Central School closed.
Karla Smith-Kasten is the Manistee County Recycling Coordinator. She started her environmental services career in asbestos abatement in Traverse City. She transitioned to asbestos testing, spending over 25 years in Chicago as a senior project manager specializing in asbestos and lead testing.
Manistee Environmental Action Collaborative is concerned with preserving the highest quality of life through the protection and stewardship of the environment in Manistee County. Meetings are the third Wednesday of each month, 7:00 pm at the Downtown Education Center at 400 River St., Manistee.
